Google buys ICOA (Wi-Fi hotspot provider) for $400 million






Google will expand its Wi-Fi and wired footprint via the acquisition of ICOA for $400 million. ICOA provides Wi-Fi hotspots in the U.S.


Officially, ICOA provides a Wi-Fi hotspot network in airports, restaurants and other high-traffic areas. The company also provides hotspot operations tools for companies.

 
ICOA is based in Warwick, RI and owns Wi-Fi networks in 40 states. Partners include iPass, Boingo Wireless and BroadSky Networks. ICOA trades over the counter in so-called Pink Sheets, which is a low volume market.

 
With ICOA, Google will gain access Wi-Fi access points as well as other services that can be lumped into its enterprise portfolio. ICOA provides network design, an operating system, administration tools, billing options and location monitoring.
